Is a month a month?

29 companies here sell something priced “a month” that is not a month. A four-week cycle fits thirteen times into a year rather than twelve, so the monthly figure is right and the yearly one everybody assumes from it is wrong by a whole extra payment.

Every plan billed on something other than a month

Sorted by what the cycle does to a year, most expensive first. The cycle length in the second column is the company's own wording (“per 4 weeks”, “per 28-day supply”, “billed approx. every 4 weeks”), not our interpretation of a plan name. Cycles between 23 and 60 days appear here.

The arithmetic, worked

The charge count is floored on purpose: 365 ÷ 28 is 13.04, and nobody is billed four hundredths of a time. A whole number is also the only version of this figure you can check against a bank statement, which is the point of putting it on a page.

When a longer cycle takes a payment out

6 of these rows go the other way. A 60-day cycle fits 6 times into a year, so a plan priced at a given figure per cycle costs less across twelve months than the same figure billed monthly would. It is the same mechanism, and reporting only the direction that suits the argument would turn a measurement into a complaint.

What this doesn't claim

• Only the companies that say soA plan is here because its own price label states a period in weeks or days. 383 of the 412 companies reviewed here do not state one, so their “/mo” may or may not mean a calendar month. If a company you are with quotes a “/mo” figure and never says what a month means, its refill dates are the only way to find out.
• It is not a hidden feeEvery company here states the period in the same place it states the price. The gap is between what they wrote and what a reader assumes a monthly figure means over a year, which is why the fix is arithmetic rather than an accusation.
• A year is 365 days hereNo leap years, no partial cycles, no assumption you stay the whole time. The break-even arithmetic for staying or stopping is on prepay break-even, and why a three-month plan often isn't three months is the longer piece behind this table.
